So I got a killer deal on a saltwater setup today.

its a 65 gallon, included, is a full filter system, minus the pump, so ill need one of them. All tubes/pipes. Included the glass canopy, and light setup.

Now onto my questions.

Do I need a protein skimmer?

Do I need a power head?

What pump do you suggest?

And the glass tops, do I need them? I always see saltwater tanks with them off, does it affect the light?

You will need a protein skimmer for a reef tank, you will need some good flow in there for your reef inhabitant's, Mag 7 for the return pump to the display tank from your sump. If you don't plan on metal halide's the glass top's will be fine to keep they'll keep down evaporation. It can affect light if it has a lot of salt creep build up or is dirty.

Yes on the skimmer.
Power head is good too. (unless you have a strong pump and good flow distributed throughout the tank)
Whats the light settup? If it's halide, for sure, no glass top. If compact, you could keep the top on, but would probably be best to remove.

Thanks Mr Reef.

And its a halide i believe he said. It has 2 bulbs, and the moonlights. This setup wont be up for atleast a month.I dont know much about saltwater yet, and want to do this right. Ill look into a powerhead for down the road, and just get a good pump. Any suggestions on protein skimmer?

The new marinelands are nice. I want one BAD. They are Uber expensive though.

i wanna stay on the cheaper end if possible lol

ASM is a great protein skimmer for in sump easy to clean, maintain, and do awesome work. They are very very reliable and worth every penny. I would suggest you picking up this book it's about 80 page's long and will break down everything for you as far as a saltwater tank it has helped a lot of people and I myself reference it still to this day.

best $16.00 investment you'll make for your saltwater tank.
