right so i got these 2 gorgeous FHs, a female and male :nilly:
iv been looking up on what a good FH is and what qualities they should have and i noticed that mine have everything apart from double flowers. my female had a dragons tear and is stunning as is my male. :D:drool:
so i need advice on if i should put them in their own tanks so they will grow to their full potential and wont get nibbled or keep them with the frontosa, birchir and some other cichlids and risk the nubbling of their fins and what-not?????
they are only about 2inches at the mo

ok first of all.

how big are the flowerhorns currently?

how big is the tank with the fronts and such in it?

flowerhorns are extremely more aggressive then fronts. i have heard of people putting flowerhorns in with african mbuna and have had no problems.

what are the "other" cichlids also in there?

2inches at the mo.
so is the front and venustus thats in with them. they will be split from the front when they r about 4 inches, just waiting for the tank to arrive and leave it 6wks to cycle.
then if the female and male dont mix (which i suspect they wont lol) then they will each have their own tanks.
and the venustus will be sold on when hes gotten a bit bigger.

Hi there all.

If I may share some of my thoughts, hope you don't mind.

Putting the 2-inchers with the other fishes will not be a problem, with the fronts and venustus that you just mentioned.

You mentioned that the fronts and the venustus are of the same size with that of the flowerhorns, if so, I would say that there is no problem at the moment.

Don't worry too much about the fins or scales being nibbled or damaged at this stage. It won't happen that much and if it does, they usually heal and grow back.

The aggression usually comes after when the flowerhorns mature to a more bigger size, somewhere around the 5-inch size. I have raised nice sized flowerhorns way back and have used a 50 gallon for 2 fishes upon reaching 4 inches. All I had to do was to secure a divider.

In my own experience, the size of the tank only comes 3rd, nutrition being the 1st and water quality coming in 2nd.

Good luck to your new pets. :headbang2

cheers for that mate, all opinions welcome unless they are nasty lol.
yep im aware i have a strange mix there, i was supposed to get 2 fhs and 3 fronts, but had to leave them there while my tank cycled (after losing 3 8inch fronts over a wknd away :-( it needed a good scrub) but when i went back 2 of my fronts had 'died' (i think he sold them, seeing as the only one i got was the one with half a tail lol) and he basically gave me the option of spend the money i had already paid on fish in the store there and then or walk away £30 less. si he gave me the venustus and some other malawi cichlid...hence why they will be going.
all the fish are in a tank also with a talking catfish, birchir, white tail gibbi, gibbi which are all 6inch+ and 2ft plec lol.
but the others leave them alone its just the nibbling from the cichlids.
i hope all that made sense, just thought i would explain myself
