it was in a tank that has a footprint of a 55g but half the vertical height (so i guess it was like 30 or so gallons). it was with a bunch of large cichlids. his barbels are torn and has battle scars.

anyways, its about 18 inches so it is a little cramped in my 125g (although clearly better off)
i gave him a bunch of sushi-grade tuna loin (lol) that i froze off and portioned.

i have two ideas. 1) kiddy pool in the basement (and since its native it doesnt have to be heated yay 2) stock tank

what foot print "pond" would be suitable for the average sized channel in your opinion?

please dont tell me about the state record fish caught 15 years ago. i want to know the realistic average size lol.

Assuming he isn't stunted from the small tank confinement, you could probably expect another 6-12" out of him. As far as pond/stock tank size, I'd aim for at least 300g, with a larger footprint better than height (obviously).

Post up some pics! I've got a 12-13" (eyeballed) albino channel cat right now. But he's got a 3,500g pond in the backyard waiting for him.

well it would be going into something that isn't a tank after this 125g...so 300g you say? what would you think be a suitable footprint?

Well, considering it could get 30" (or larger), anything smaller than 6x3 is going to be too small. If you can, maybe aim for something that's 8' diameter and round. That way he'll have lots of swimming space, and won't keep running into walls. Depth isn't as important, but if you can go at least 18-24", that should be good.

I think places like tractor supply co sell "stock" tanks that are 8'x2' and round, and something like 300g or so. One of those would do nicely, and they're not exorbitantly priced, either.

and would fit nice in my basement by my workout area....

the biggest and best bang for your buck is a kiddie pool. get one of the metal framed ones, not the inflatable kind, and their pretty sturdy.

you could get something like a 10x6 pool for around $1-150 and your catfish would be set. my 1100g intex pool was only $99 from amazon.com
