I'm planning on getting a 50g acrylic tank, 24x24x20. I'll be getting an Eheim this go around and would like suggestions. Normally this wouldn't be an issue but to be 100% truthful the number system they use somewhat confuses me when I'm going from page to page comparing their canisters and more so I don't want to buy a filter that may be considerably less quality to a newer model. I'm simply looking for a filter that will suffice for a 50g planted aquarium with a light to medium bio-load (yet to be determined, still planning equipment.) I don't want to over do it as far as current goes and I also do not want a built in heater unless I can be thoroughly convinced to do so. I was looking at the Eheim Professional 3 350 aka Eheim 2073, (I think?) thoughts on this model? Any input is appreciated and welcome, lastly for those who may wonder I'm setting up a lower energy consumption system compared to my usual equipment choices.

Thanks

Eheim are amazing, back in Europe I had the same Eheim filter for over 10 years without a single problem. since I got my fluval a year ago its already leaked twice and has a problem of never being able to get started. my step dad has the exact same problem with his fluval which is a few years old.

come on we trust the germans to make expensive cars and technology and you realy think that they can't make a sweet canister filter?

Eheim > Fluval in my experiences

Well... I guess everyone has different experiences. I used to have two ehiems both with electronic controls and without. My experience has been that they both leaked after a year and a half run. Don't remember the models exactly but one was the biggest size they make and the other was half the size. I had the smaller running my planted discus tank (46g) and the bigger running my small monster tank (55g). I have switch over to fluval now and I'm very happy with the operation of both filters (FX5 & 406). Both ehiems leaked from the same area; priming pump seal. I found it very hard at times to get them primed as well after filter maintenance. Hope this helps.

the 350 is much better yes, but the site lists what the recommended size is, and then what the most you could get away with is. so the most you could get away with is 250l with the 250. your tank being 200 it should be okay. but the 350 would give you really good water quality and allow you to stock more heavily

Ok, good to hear. I was originally looking into the 350 so that will save me some headache when it comes time to make a final decision. And you're clearly more knowledgeable on Eheim filters than I am, is the 350 also called 2073? It seems most places sell by the 4 digit number.

Thanks for the input Rob-Tec, I currently and always have run Fluvals but I'm aiming for energy efficiency this time around. Could I ask if you ever found out why your Eheims leaked in the same place (frequent/infrequent maintenance?) and if it was easily fixed?

I think it is, if you go to this link
http://www.shopping.com/Eheim-Eheim-Pro-3-Filter-2073/info#keyFeatures
and mouse over the image, you zoom in and on the box it clearly says "350"

It's really common for European products to be given a different name in North America, because as you found out earlier, Litres are confusing if you are used to Gallons (and of course vice versa)

PS. a friend of mine had his Eheim leak (mine were always fine) he just ordered a replacement sealing, this same issue happens all the time with fluval and other canister filters. its sadly just a downfall of using a canister filte
