hey guys hopefully goin to grab that 15" Florida/Spotted gar 2moro after noon, but before i do, i just wondered just how big should i expect the mouth to be? ie what size would fit in his mouth???

they are gape limited by the width of their mouth opening...so a 12-15" Florida gar could probably swallow something around 2.5" give or take...if the fish is only 1-2" tall/wide, but elongate...consider it toast if the gar decides it would make a nice meal. larger, laterally compressed body types of fishes will not be swallowed by gars, but that doesnt mean they won't pester them or nip up fins.--

ok wicked, thanks! is it likely to consider a 8" tyretrack a tasty meal? other question was how fast are they? is it likely to take out a 4.5" rainbow shark and im geussin a 9" pbass anit gona make a good tankmate either...

not that this posses any real problems just tryna figure the limit with tankmates...

gar are not that aggressive. mine did kill a shovelnose and rip it in half one night lol. thats the only occurance..

pbass won't make a great tankmate because of their potential of aggressive feeding compared to the gar...if you can make sure the gar is well-fed AND is not bothered by the pbass, it could work for a while. as for the rainbow shark...that fish would be as good as fish food with a 13-15" gar...maybe even a smaller gar, so i would reconsider that tankmate combo.

the eel would probably be ok, but that's a relative statement considering a gar on the smaller end of the size spectrum you described. if all else fails, go with a smaller gar.

a gar's bite can be as fast as around 20 ms, which is really quite fast...if it wants to attack a fish, it will succeed on the second or third try (if not, and likely so, on the first attempt) --

my 13" florida ate a 4" snakehead
lol, all my experience with snake heads they get picked on or yet... so not surprised by that what sh asp. were they? outa interest....

ok so i think tankmates i may try are, 9" black aro, poly, 5" silver dats, 5"+ plecs, 6" jd, 5" ob peacock and maybe my 6" o? all the cichlids i mentioned are my layed back crew.... none of those fish are at all aggy! only the o wonce had a set to with my yellow lab, but that lab is out wardly rowdy! so recon its worth a try???

is there any chance of a bowfin working as tankmate? i'd love to do a prehistoric tank with gar, aro, bowfin, poly, ck, sa lung... maybe a dat, eel and plec too....

keep in mind a 4" snakehead is pretty narrow in terms of width, and elongate, fusiform fishes will go down easy if a gar wants to eat them--
