Named the thread that way since farmy CBs are a crap shoot haha, caved when I went to grab some food and dechlor and snagged this tiny endli

He was the smallest fish in the tank, only endli, w/ some 4 inch Senegal's (this guy is like 2-2.5 inch) that seemed to be bullying him so I picked him up. This is my first LJ so its pretty cool to see an endli in my tank finally, even though its a farmy lol. Can't wait until this guy and my teugs are big enough to go in the main tank

Thanks guys, i was trying to hold out for a nice WC but then the baby Volta JA was holding for me jumped and died :/.. also sick of waiting to see confirmed WC lower jaw babies somewhere haha hopefully he has some good genetics! I do notice he has the eye speckles my friends CBs do not have

Agreed, nice pattern on that guy. Looking forward to updates on how the grow out progresses.

Thanks man, can't wait for him to beef up a good bit, he's going to be awesome. I'm being super careful this time because literally all my Senegal's have died of bloat, because they're pigs and don't let anything else gets its fill. Idk if I've just been unlucky in that respect :/ I don't over feed, each small fish gets 2 pellets and whatever bloodworms/krill/red worm (all cut up together.. my night medley mix, I don't put a lot of this in) they can snap up before usually a Senegal takes them out

My albino sen died two nights ago, he was 5 inch (grown from 2) and he was a pig. He never stopped eating or looking for food (you know, that little nose to the ground thing polys do). I noticed he was a lil bloaty before I went to work, nothing crazy, so I put some salt and some general cure in. Dead when I got back. Not only dead but bleeding. I hate CBs sens lol. Even the one I got too 9 inch died of bloat just like this except I went to school instead of work to come home to see it dead. I'm really hoping this endli has good genes as I've already said. Its sad to see what not-caring about good genes could do to a specie!

Nice little endli,

I hear lot's of things get blamed on genetics, but if your having issues with bloat repeatedly it's much more likely to be a dietary issue and nothing to do with genetics at all.

I also have found overfeeding in a mix can be an issue with sen's, my ornates were the same, had to be careful not to let them eat themselves to death.

Thanks DC, me and you always counter each other on this particular subject. Said genetics may have been the cause of the dietary issues we see in little sens, I've grown out a del, a sen that lasted till 9 inch, and an Ornate I sold to primetime on here that was around 8 or 9 inch. Those 3 were CBs (ornate was home bred, he said both parents were wild, don't know if it was to jack up the price or not) and were all fine.

Equally, I've had 3 Senegal's that have died before reaching 6 inch, all of extremely sudden dietary issues. I've never changed a thing about their diets and how much I feed, and because of this site I know how to keep water quality much better (algae screens and pothos ftw). I used to do a weekly 50% w/ a Senegal delhezi and leopard Cten in high school, now I do about 35% every 2-3 days to keep nitrates as low as humanly possible and have algae screens and pothos. Still this happens. Has anyone ever seen a WC bichir w/ bloat? I haven't, but I've seen plenty of threads about it w/ Sens dels ornates endlis. Also those odd spinal issues, just to use an example baconmeupscotty has a del that suddenly had a kink in its spine. I've seen a few different threads here and on other sights about it.

I know it also could be to do w/ the quality of care they get in the farms, on the way to the stores, in the stores, and could have very little to do w/ inbreeding. Or it could be a perfect storm of combination of the 2. W/o genetic testing and comparing to their wild caught counterparts we will never know for sure

I feel that genetics is just an excuse that people use to blame for a sudden death. Currently I have 2 cb endli's, 1 cb del, 1 cb albino sen and 1 cb teug and haven't experienced any problems. No kinks, no health problems. I thought my del was stunted for a long time but then I started doing wc's every other day instead of once a week and it suddenly started growing again. I feel if there is proper diet and clean water, the cb's can grow just as large as their wild counterparts. My largest endli is 16" and I've had it for about 2 years.
