i know the build up of poo(mulm) is inevitable but i swear every 2 days i need to vaccum my sand. this is a major PIMA as i have alot of rocks/ bogwood/ plants to move and it upsets my fish somethin fierce. anyways i'm pretty sure some of you may have some tips to help get this undercontrol or if its safe to let it go. i was thinking that with some of these monster tanks i doubt you vaccum regularly/completely so hopefully someone will have some ideas.

i am seriously wanting to use a whole lot of profanity but am restraining all i can but i can't promise it won't erupt at any moment

What filter do you use? How often do you feed and what foods do you feed?

What you could do is add a powerhead to add current and it will blow all the poo up and get sucked into your filter intake or overflow if you have one. Are you overfeeding your fishes?

Powerhead or an under gravel jet system to help keep the mess off of the bottom of the tank.

i may be feeding too much. i will be using an mid level siphon soon but i can't get the poo to come off the sand it just blows to a different spot, usually around my decor. is it just me? i've thought about getting a battery powered vaccum and just doing the bad spots daily but i don't want to be doing a W/C every other day. i will try w/ a powerhead to see if i can at least move it to a convienent spot
thanks for the replies

This is the very reason i will never have a sand substrate ever again. It gets dirty daily, it will burn up your filters and all this makes you hate something you used to love your aquarium.

I have a quiet one 6000 inside my tank near the bottom. It keeps all my sand clean of crap until it gets clogged.

the gravel gets just as dirty as the sand.. with sand the poop does not have a place to hide...

all the poo was collecting on one spot in my 90 gallon with sand it i had the same problem. my solution was to put a some gravel on that side. works great. i just vacuum it like normal. and it looks great. i have an ac70 powerhead in there that is like 400 gph or something like that so the current is what makes all the poo collect in the one spot. so the gravel just over there works awesome. it looks pretty cool too the way its set up. looks really natural.

same deal with my sand tank.. all the poo is in 2 spots.. however my poomonsters have discovered that they can move the sand around however they want it.. sometimes they move it in a way which changes the flow across the bottom of the tank and then the poo ends up all over the place...

even when the tank is a mess though ive yet to need more than 1 five gallon bucket worth of poosucking to get the tank clean..
