We had a saltwater LFS move into town right as I was starting to get bored with my fresh water tank and well, lets just say they were in the right place at the right time to make a lot of money off me lol. :nilly:

I want to do a FOWLR predator tank and a few fish really caught my eye. They were a Snowflake eel, a Picasso Trigger, and a Volitan Lion fish. I have done a little research into saltwater and luckily my wife is an avid micro-reef keeper so I have a decent starting base in knowing what I am getting into. :D

Besides just being excited that I have made the plunge towards saltwater I also made this post to get some ideas from others on cool/unique fish that will be compatible with these monsters. Maybe some cheap/hardy dithers or maybe some maroon clowns? What else do you guys think might work with these fish and not overstock my 125 too terribly much? (filtration to start out is an XP3, an XP2, the live rock, and possible a 125g sponge filter, I will be getting it drilled to eventually set up a sump underneath it before the fish get too huge)

The other possibility I was thinking about was the lion, eel, and then a whole bunch of other random stuff like smaller/med fish cool crustaceans and urchins, shrimp, snails, and a kick ass CUC so I have to do less maintenance lol.

O my, good thing I am going to take my time and research then lol. If I had bought stuff today that would have sucked lol

I really like the Lionfish and eel more so I suppose the trigger is out.

That depends... pulled this from an article for your consideration.

"Special considerations need to be used when selecting tank mates for lionfish. Lionfish will eat any small fish or crustacean that fits into their cavernous mouths. Even though lionfish are venomous, lionfish are not immune to being harassed or even eaten by other fish. Large eels, frogfish and other scorpion fish are all predators of lionfish in the wild. According to Michaels (1998), large angelfish, pufferfish, and triggerfish are also known to harass lionfish. Triggerfish are notorious for nipping off the dorsal spines before killing lionfish. However, I have found the planktonic feeding triggers (Blue cheek, Pink-tailed, Niger) to behave more predictable towards lionfish, and I would consider them compatible tankmates."

Heres the article, that I pulled it from, about lionfish for those interested.

Yes

Just from common sense here.... Blue throats and other less aggressive triggers can be reef safe...... I kept my lion with blue lines, queen triggers, clowns, and many more.

just common sense...

Predators will still always be trail and error though.

Trail and error. I think thats like when you chose the road less traveled and you end up walking off a cliff. Id rather avoid that.

Lions are slow swimmers and have ornate finnage. Things that CAN nip them, WILL nip them. The non aggressive triggers also tend to be very reclusive...thats just my experience after owning 2 nigers and one pink tail.

Oh, and Hi Canuck. :D
