Tonight, after something happened, my wife told me she figures I could handle delivering a baby.:WHOA:

Long story short, I scored a awesome rehome on an african walking catfish.

The guy thought he had a loach and advertised it as such. Yet, when I rechecked his add just before leaving work, he had posted a pic of a catfish.
Since I have 3 of them in my 300g I really wanted this one too. So we cut the deal and off we went to get it after work.

I paid $20 for a 12-13 inch fish which in my books was a good deal. It came out of this tank.

And I was able to score a nice big baggie of java fern from this tank for $10

So I took my wife and kids home and was in the process of transferring the fish from the 4 ltr ice cream pail he gave it to me in to a 11ltr pail.

He did not like the pail and started to try to get out. My daughter was sort of freaking out and I turned to tell her to chill. And out he went, I grabbed for it and it slipped out of my hands and down to the ground.

So I reached down got a good 2 handed grab on it and made it about 1 foot off the ground when it opened up its pectoral fins and drove one 2 inches into my right hand.

I have almost cut fingers off with my chef's knives but I have never felt anything like this.

:shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::OMG::OMG::OMG::OMG::OMG::WHOA::WHOA::WHOA::WHOA:

It went right in the fleshy part between the thumb and index finger. This pic shows how much of the fin went in.

And here are the pics about an hour or so after.

I was pretty amazed at watching this fish walk across the kitchen floor and really did not even think of the fin extension that catfish do.:screwy:

The only thing I could think of as my hand was on fire is God I hope that I have not been spiked by a fish with nasty toxins. Did some google and came up with some medical pdf docs that deal with this. The first thing I did was to get my hand in a bucket of hot salty water for a good half hour or so and do my best to squeeze it out.

Right now the 8 migraine liquid advil are doing a good job of dulling down the pain, and it is only red the size of a dollar piece on my hand so I hope it is just the puncture and not something inside the hole.

I am definitely going to watch the red to see if it trails up or goes any farther. If that happens I am off to the doc's.

Now here are some pics of the fish beside a 250ml prime for size

Now for all the ladies who have had babies

That's quite the experience. But watch how many of those advil you take. Don't go over the recommended daily value, it'll cause organ damage, like you need one more thing wrong!

Do you think ammonia, or vinegar would help? I've heard both of these for varying types of toxins. I also highly recommend irrigating it with iodine, as best you can.

Have you had a tetanus shot in the past 5 years?

been there done that... cept i got stuck by this guy in literally about the exact same spot on my hand...

I have to be honest, no ammon or vinegar at my house. So I really thought about the in the field treatment but just could not bring myself to do it my kids just would not understand

I have iodine in my field medic kit I keep in my kitchen so that is a done deal.

They are in fact toxic. Now lets talk about you passing a lemon.... ;)

Ah lets not :grinno: I have not the gall not the stones to picture or imagine that ;)

nice avatar pic by the way

I am really hoping that this fishes fins are not equal length because if they were I have an issue with a piece being broke off in my hand will tell tomorrow.

hope it ain't stuck in there, i can't imagine the process required to get that out... supersplinter + catfish toxin = numb hand for a while haha

There is a small chance you have a piece in your hand. I would soak it in Epsom salt and hot water every few hours. If there is no chunk o' catfish then it should at least help remove the toxins. Hope your pretty much pain free in the a.m.

And thanks on the compliment on my fishies. :)
