If there was a large 12"+ dovii in a backyard pond, would it attack you if you were walking through it? We've all heard and seen bow aggressive they could be in a tank but how much of that aggression is because they're in a small glass box.

depends on the dovii, but I would assume it would swim away, have not heard of any person being bitten by a dovii or any cichlid for that matter, unless it was guarding fry

My Dovii cross texas tries to take me out all the time....
He hits the top of the glass trying to get at me. His body one time was 3/4 out of the tank trying to bite me..by himself in his side of tank. 155g divided
But now he is in a community tank and he runs the show. 700g

Blue gill/sunfish/pumpkinseed ect. not even 7 inches will make your foot bleed if you step too close to their nest. Territory is territory regardless of how much room there is.

Ruf R I have never seen a Dovii/Texas hybrid I didn't know it was remotely possible- Do you have pics of it anywhere? I would love to see it.

my 7" dovii male and 5" female try to fight my american bulldog, and show no fear when she head butts the tank

In a pond I'd only expect that level of aggression if the fish was spawning. I fish a lot (weekly to 2x a week from spring thru fall) wading 100% of the time and have only been attacked when fish were guarding nests, and even that has been rare. I have, however, seen folks nearly bitten (and one bitten) by Pike, Musky, and Smallmouth Bass because they were trailing their fingers in the water.
