Is the flex that that the tank displays when filled?

I'm curious to know what, if any, affect having a welded angle iron structure would bring to the table? So if you had this welded frame and then inserted the plywood tank in this, would that effect the size of glass you could use?

As far as I am aware it is the height of the tank. In the UK if you want to go above 24" tall most companies wont build it out of anything less than 12MM and above 30" it goes up to 15MM.That may be different for a plywood tank construction and evenmore so with a welded steel frame.

when you bui9ld the tank you will need bracing also.

Yep...this is why I am curious if a welded steel frame will have any factor on the thickness of the glass. Since there should be no flex that could be attributed to the standard glass/ply structures.

The factor that affects glass or acrylic thickness is deflection. This is how much it will bend as opposed to a given amount of pressure. The higher the window, the greater the pressure. Frames are always a good idea, but most calculators cannot plan for the multitude of ways in which to reinforce the glass/acrylic panel. Theoretically, you could use thinner glass/acrylic with better bracing, but without getting down to the minute details with the math on your specific situation, there is no way to tell how much thinner you could go. I doubt it would end up being a huge difference anyway. Having better bracing would allow you to feel a bit more comfortable with a lower safety factor in your calculations.

I have been considering 40mm (1 1/2 inch) steel box section as bearers/tank frame a si can nock that up just as easy as timber, instaed of 3x2 timber in my 800g ply build, spacing them at 24 inch centers and line with 18mm ply, then seal with 2 layers of 600gram fibreglass, it would be more than strong enough but as i am going 36 inch deep i am going to be safe with 19mm (3/4) glass, now i can get away with 15mm, glass but for the peace of mind and better saftey factor i would always go with that bit more, the stronegst you can.
If its price that is a main concern the price between 15mm and 19mm was only £100, 3100 for a good peace of mind.
