... so.. whats a sump?

i realize the question makes me look like an idiot but ive never been clear on what exactly a sump is.. anyone wanna give me a explanation?

A sump in most cases is where you keep your filtration media for the overflows coming in and out of your tank. It is also used to house skimmers, and also converted/segmented to include a refegium for some salt water setups.
