they started the same size.. same age.. same tank.. same food.. but they are growing at such different rates..
i know with some species the "alpha male" releases hormones or something that keeps all the other males smaller or something (this may be a myth for all i know.. or it may be true.. i dunno)

or do i simply have 2 different species that grow at different rates.. honestly i have done like zero research i just want a quick answer..

and im well aware of how big they get and how fast it happens...

Do they both get an equal amount of food when fed??

they use to... then the big one started getting big... now he prettymuch gets whatever he wants.. i feed twice a day..
they eat prettymuch anything and everything that goes in that tank.. bloodworks, brine shrimp, chiclid pellets, floating sticks, flake, bits of market shrimp leftover from my GSP... they even much veggies after my pleco rips them up a bit
once i noticed the bigger one chasing off the small one at feeding time i started feeding across the whole tank insted of just in one spot.. now they both get their fill..

the small one has grown maybe 1/2" since the end of july (whenever the socal mfk meet was.. they were both one of oddballer giveaways <3).. the big one has trippled in size..

LOOKS LIKE YOU HAVE A TEMENSIS aswell..so you have 2 sp's of cichla and both will grow at different rates..It is also a matter of "who" eats more cichla..Any more pics??

The top pic looks like a Tem, if so it will grow faster than your other bass..

the two different species thing would explain it..

all my other pics are fuzzy.. ill get some good ones this weekend...

watching them yawn is so amazing...

That top one looks like a Timensis hybrid of some sort. It def has Temensis genes it, but possibly some Orino or Mono as well...just a guess due to its markings. Given that it likely has Tem. genes, it will grow fast and big. Tems are one of the bigger species, if not the biggest.
