I like looking and reading about pikes, but I'm not sure how personable they are compared to CA cichlids. I've been to Vin Kutty's site and there are some cool enough fish there. Why are pikes so popular, so much that they have their own subforum? What is the attraction other than the cool look they have? I particularly like the five following pikes:

Crenicichla celidochilus
Crenicichla johanna
Crenicichla marmorata
Crenicichla saxatilis
Crenicichla lacustris

I know that celidochilus, and lacustris are very rare in the hobby, but I like the look of those I've seen on the web.

Most people seem to like pikes because of their aggressive attitudes.

I have C. celidochilus and C. sp. 'Xingu I' that eat from my hand. The Xingu's are close to 12".

I like the variety you can get and the challenge of trying to breed large pikes.

I think it's the fact that, other than oscars, pikes come closest to that big central personalities for south americans. Even the dwarves have more spunk and personality than typical south american dwarves. I remember watching a 3" male dwarf flaring and attacking his own reflection. Wish I had a camera for that, it still makes me smile though.

Hmm I think pikes are selectively aggressive
Like mine don't bother my female motoro but flares and attacks my male MM when it goes near it -_-"

They don't bother the smaller fishes in the tank too and I find them more defensive kind of aggressive than an all out bully like a butti.

Anyway I think pikes are really beautiful and they remind me of torpedos

Do they have specific water requirements? I have water that is kinda hard and basic.

i think they are appealing because they have that aggressive cichlid behavior and they are just not as common as alout of SA/CA cichlids. everyone and there mother has owned a jd or convict at one point but how many can say they have owned a celidochilus or a lacustris. i think the fact that they are tougher to find makes them more appealing. plus the fact they are the best cichlid.

I've found that, except for breeding, they tend to be fairly adaptable to differant water types.
