anyone in socal fish the kelp beds? i just got a boat and want to start fishing the kelp beds but ive never fished there before, i mostly fish in the bay. i need to know what kind of tackle to use, recommended setups and whats best for white sea bass and yellow fin. thanks

Well their is alot of things to use.
-Fly line live bait
-2/0 or so lead head with a 5in swimbait either sardine, anchovie, the green ones and the brown ones.
-Irons chrome, blue and white, blue and chrone, scambled eggs, bird ****s, dorado

I just listed what worked for me also where in socal are you located??

My plastics rig is an Calico Special 8ft trigger stick, Calcutta 200GTB, 50lb Power Pro braid and a top shot 0f 30lb P-Line.

For fishing the iron, I use a Calstar 900H 9' jig stick, Penn 501 with Tiburon frame and 30lb P-Line.

Not a big fan of fisahing live bait as I prefer artificials. Heavy freshwater bass gear is enough to get by in the kelps, unless you run into a YT or a WSB.

san diego. what kind of rod/reel setup would you use? how many lbs test?

For me when I go onto a boat I have about 4 setups.

-calcutta 700s with 65lbs at 400yards of spectra top shotted with 20lbs at 200yards of mono.
-sealing 50 with 85lbs at 500yards of specta top shotted with 30lbs at 250yards of mono
-saltist 40h with 100lbs at 600yards of spectra top shotted with 40lbs at 150yards of mono
-TLD 25 150lb spectra at 800yards of spectra and top shotted with 60lbs at 200yards of mono

each knot was tied with a double uni that has never yet to break.

And for me I like to jig and mess around than rather have live bait and let it swim.

Just remeber what you setup is what your going to catch and you learn as you fish. I started at a young age fish and now im 20 and I learned many of things from my fishing buddys in which Im the youngiest and their over 30 xP

Also a reminder, dont go for the cheap line as for me I stick with berkly, pline, and izoline.

Yup cause when you hit a yt or wsb you need the right gear unless you are an exp. fisher and know how to fight a fish. Cause one of my friends caught a 80lbs yt on a 12lb setup and it took longer than expected to catch this fish with the setup. It would normally take about 30min-1hr but this took 1hr and 40min.
