the store turtle usually get sold once they hit the 7" mark.
you can try your local pond or lake, just sneak up on them(they're VERY wary) and you can catch some HUGE sliders. I've caught well over a foot and seen much bigger ones(possibly different species though)
just watch for the ones that are basking, they're easy to catch.
they can dash pretty quick to the water though.
look for the shallow areas in the water so they can't swim away

I caught what I think was a cooter once that had to be 18 inches long and was quite hefty and a powerful son of a gun. It was at a Mexican restaruant where they feed the local turtles chips and they come to people for food. I think this one was passing through and wasnt familiar with people, because he did all he could to get away unlike the others, who were kinda used to kids catching them. He was pokin around some submerged roots when some kid goes 'Snapping turtle!' and then Mr. Steve Irwin wannabe (me) practically dives on it while some old ladies are goin' all PETA on me...
