Do they school in the wild by any chance?
I have had one for about a year (currently about 14") He's been grand and wonderful and full of personality.
I acquired a new one (also now 14") that has been in QT for the last 5 weeks, but last night I put the two of them together. Prior ot being together the newly acquired one has had the personality of wet news paper. I have posted about it before.
The two bonded instantly and have been inseparable since putting the together. The new pacu came with an oscar and he too is in the mix... the trio of them are really impressive to watch. All are eating with enthusiasm and wagging their little fins in excitement when I approach the tank. The one with out a personality has gained one as though a switch was flipped.
Additionally they both gained a LOT of color when put together. One now has a VERY red anal fin and one does not (Male/ female colors perhaps?) and both have much more orange on their bellies and chins. Its hard to put this into words, but the behavior differences are phenomenal. These fish are MUCH happier together than either was apart.
Clearly they are social, do they school?
