i think they are social to a point.. when they are tiny they do great in groups of 3 - 5. As they grow they become more independent, but they always seem to have one other fish that they stay close to.
My Dozer (c. ocellaris) had a best buddy angelfish, until we moved Gabriel to another tank. And then he started hanging out with the Silver Arowana, Pinky. They recently got some new Temensis tankmates and Dozer still sticks close to Pinky, but he spends more time away from her and interacting with the Tems.
the group of 5 ocellaris dudes hunt and defend each other in a pack, i never saw that with Dozer and Happy Dude when they were young. And from what i understand it's unusual for Peacock Bass to exibit pack behaviour..
We noticed when our first set of peacock bass were young (Dozer and Happy Dude) that they spent most of their time hiding until we got them tankmates. After there were 3 other fish in the tank (total of 6 at that point) they spent more time out swimming around.
