Soft patches on driftwood?

I went driftwood collecting today, dmack style, picked up 3 nice big bits of wood.

2 of them were pretty sunbaked, I washed them all, but the problem is they all have a few soft bits on them where the wood just sort of peals off.

Is this unsafe for the tank? is it rotting etc?

The soft part is rot and will dissolve fairly quickly in your tank. I'd use it in the garden instead.

When collecting driftwood what should i be looking for?

The dry bits I picked up obviously didn't feel soft when dry, only when I washed them.

Should I look for dry bits or bits in the river?
