Hi everyone,

I new here and I was looking for some advice as to what sort of soft shell turtle I have (see my avatar).

I am highly confused as I have had it for about a year and when I bought it, it was approx 1" diameter and now it is approx 3". It happily lives in my tropical aquarium (approx 68 gallons) along with all my fish (including small neon tetras and lots of others). I was told by the shop that it did not need a basking area but now I am thinking maybe I should get one.

I am also wondering if I should really put it in a tank on it's own? The only fish that I have ever lost have been the new albino tetras I bought a couple of weeks ago that disappeared over night (presuming the turtle ate them!) but none of my other fish are harmed or have disappeared.

Wondered what everyone else thought.

Thanks

Need a bigger picture.

softshells are destructive turtles and probably will start to kill your fish as it gets bigger and although they do not absolutely need a basking spot, it is good to provide them with one so that they can use it if they want to.

the one in ur avatar is an asian softshell and will prolly need a 75 or so to himself in the long run.

He or she is a chinese softshell turtle Pelodiscus sinensis and yes he both needs a bigger tank and a basking place. Also if he is a she in a few years will also need a place out of the water to lay her eggs, very inportant
