question!

is it possible for a soft shell to live in a 55 gallon filled 80 percent of the way so it has room to breath,or does it need land to crawl on,also.somebody at a lfs told me that they are pure aquatic, and to not worry about land areas.and also, what if i add a 8 inch texas would there be trouble between them or would they respect each other.

softshells technically should have a basking area but rarely use it.
mixing any species of softshell with fish = dead mutilated fish, and a softshell with possible fungus.

so i have a wild caught western softshell and i should not keep it with this crappie i have? sorry to some what derail the thread.

if i want to keep one by himself, what size tank would be best(a 75 sound nice?).

Tank size also depends on what sex you have. When it comes to softshells, most males grow half the size of the females. Do you know what species of softshell it is?

depends on the species.
some softies would do fine, others get the size of a kiddie pool.
