Soft water and African cichlids good/bad?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
depends on what type of african cichlids. some types do come from soft/acidic waters.

others like lake tangiyakan or malawi need to have hard alkaline waters.

The question is too vague to be answered correctly. Like mentioned above please include the species or local your asking about. Just how soft the water is would help as well, what are your test kit readings? If you already have soft water go South American! :D

I think when someone says "African cichlids" they are almost always referring to those that prefer hard alkaline water from lake Malawi or lake tanganyika. There are indeed some cichlids from African rivers that live in softer, acidic water. I think this is like someone saying SA Cichlid... That could technically refer to angelfish, discus, crenicichla, etc. but 99% of the time it is referring to species that you like to keep Justin. ;)

The beauty of soft water is that you can buffer it up to whatever you want easily. There are a few ways to do this, but some of the most common choices are using a commercial prepared buffer powder, using a bag of crushed coral in the filter, or using aragonite sand for a substrate, or a mixture of these.
