I want to get shrimp & I think my water is soft. According to local water commission moderately soft & neutral in ph (7-7.3). Hardness ranges fro 32-42 ppm. Would they be ok? Should I add anything to help buffer the water. I read a bit at petshrimp saying that baking soda was too drastic a change, crushed coral was suggested as more stable. So basically would they need it? Benefit from it? I don't have any crushed coral handy, sea shells ok? Anything else to improve shell health?

what kind of shrimp do you want to keep? Some species prefer conditions like yours. I have to soften my water for my crystal reds to breed well. Feeding them a well balanced diet intended for inverts would help as well. I really like hikari crab cuisine and hbh crab and lobster bites.

I was going to say the same thing until I read this post. Most dwarf shrimp like harder water, although CRS seem to thrive in soft water. Let us know what type you are keeping.

Oh, that might help huh. lol sorry. I just got some CRS! Only time I've ever paid so much for something so small beside like jewelry! lol Guy I got them from said he feeds a pinch of flake daily to the tank of adults. So far I've given 2 granules of MicroCarbs with cyclop-eeze (it was handy).

I'd love to hear about everyone's shrimp setups. Right now there are 7 in a 5g BB with java moss, a green spot algae problem, corner filter (air driven - no carbon) and a few pesky snails. Might win an award for ugliest tank with prettiest inhabitants. Tank pH is about 7.4, still not found much about keeping them. I have a low light planted 20g with a young bristlenose, has a sponge over the intake of the HOB. Was going to put them in there, then got paranoid about the ferts I've used in there. I'm probably just over thinking it though, cause I usually forget to add ferts anyway.

Where can I find hikari crab cuisine or hbh crab and lobster bites? I've been looking for something made for them to eat, but so far only found a few sellers overseas. Probably just me not seeing it or something strange.
Thanks for the replies!

I got my hikari crab cuisine at that fish place. They will also eat some algae wafer. And they usually like shirakura shrimp food (from japan). I have 17 CRS in a 30g heavily planted tank. In an ideal world, they would be in a pH ranging from about 6.2-7.0ish. I have mine in 7.4 and they re reproducing. Ada aquasoil is a good way to lower pH for them. They prefer cooler waters than alot of the shimp, low 70's max for good reproduction. My tank is currently at 71. Ferts can be ok, although I don't dose them. Hope this helps!

as long as the water isnt straight RO or distilled water you will be fine.

shrimp shell isnt made of calcium, but calcium is used to harden its shell after a molt.

shrimp shell is actually made out a carbohydrate, i believe its called and spelled chiton
