I will soon be moving my tanks to a house that has well water with a water softener. Will I still have to use Prime with water changes?

Most watersofteners use salt to soften the water, better to use water that hasnt passed thru it for your fish. And no you dont need to use dechlor for well water.

I have a private well with a water softener and I've never used anything to dechlore the water, however it is not a good idea IMO to put tap water directly into your tanks when water changing time comes around. I let all water age atleast overnight (usually a few days longer) in buckets to get the gases out. It is possible to use a drip system that puts your tap water straight into the tank as long as it is a very slow drip. Not science on my end but thought I'd throw that in since I know someone who has a multiple drip system for 50+ tanks using straight tap water.

The only thing that I'm concerned about is rust. Our well at our barn comes straight out of the ground and it is very rusty. I'm worried that if I use the water before it goes through the softener it will be rusty.

I hear ya bro, mines the same way straight from the well. I would atleast filter it passively with some sort of membrane before it goes in the tank. Your ph is probably around 7.8 from the tap like mine. Not such a bad thing for most african cichlids but I wouldn't advise trying to keep stuff like discus or killifish unless you get the alkalinity down a bit.;)

:iagree: My African's really show their color.

I have been using my well water from the tap and may now reconcider it.

I installed TWO whole house filters (after the blue pressure tank and the softner equiptment.) and change the filters once a month at a tune of $3.75/filter. This will help all of your water appliances and overall water quility. I have also heard of putting a whole house filter inline in a water python for refilling the tank.

P.S. no need for a de-chloride chemical, you do not have any, unless you have your well head treated to kill bacteria. (i have have mine done once every 24 months or so.)

i have a well that goes through the softner(with salt) and i havent had any problems all i have to do it put water straight in and my ph is 7.0 right out of the falset...but thats just me

I used to do that too. Although it never seemed to harm any fish, I've made it a habit to age my water prior to adding it just as an optimizing thing (a tiny bit less stress on the fish). You're very lucky to have nuetral water from your faucet:thumbsup:
