I just moved, and now have hard city water and a brine type water softener in the house. does anyone have any experience with spftened water and planted tanks?

When you say "brine type", I assume you refer to the regeneration of the cartridge?!
In general, the best way to soft water is reverse osmosis. Ion exchangers (such as those that are regenerated by brine solution) add other ions to the water (sodium & chloride), maintaining conductivity of the water constant. Part of softwater tanks is also conductivity, so I don't think it's a good way to go.

I dont have a softener but from everything I read you do not want to use it for your tank water,there is usually a bypass or some faucet ahead of the softener
