Was wondering. Some of you use indian almond tea leaves or peat or blackwater or whatever. I also know alot more people use a little salt with their large fish. Won't this stress fish out, especially south american fish. The aquarium salt will raise the ph and hardness slightly while the peat or leaves are trying to lower the ph and hardness. Need thoughts on this one.

the salt ppl use to soften water is not like sea salt it will not raise the PH ..lol using what u see in a pet shop called Aqurium Salt is just away of getting ripped off.. go to LOWES and buy a 40lb bag for 3 of for dollars that will lat a long long time..u'll find it in a yellow bag in the plumbing dept Mortans watere softing salt

Actually, a water softener for your house is a large filter that removes metals and junk out of the water to soften it. The salt that is added to a water softener is to clean the filter inside and make it last for a long while. The salt acts as a flush. The salt is not what softens the water. Salt does increase ur ph. It might not be real noticable unless you add alot of it. It does however make a noticable affect on your hardnesses. Salt for a water softener is able to be used for a tank. However most aquarium salts are not pure salt and have extra vitamins and minerals added to them that is why I use those. Also that is why african cichlid salts and R/O salts are used. They replenish lost minerals and increase the ph to an africans liking and add ph to R/O water that is very low.

Also, pond salt or aquarium salt is sea salt. It differs in aquarium sea salt in that there are alot of enhanced or added extra minerals and vitamins to support a growing healthy reef/ fish system where as regular sea salt(pond or aquarium salt) is to help support a system that requires alot less to none of that stuff. It actually acts as an irritant to large fish which make it produce more slime coat which in turn helps it heal faster and fight bacteria, fungus, disease, and parasites. The minerals and vitamins in the salt are just an added bonus. Now can anyone help with my original question?
