As for the title says/ask,BTW how many types of softshells are there?tnx!

I find they grow slowly in captivity. There are about a dozen species, between the american and the asians, I would say.

I think there are a few species from asia?

yeah there are but i still dont know what is it in particular,as foe the moment im thinking about its growth rate so that i know when shall i buy a separate tank,he's still in my community tank with angels, clown loaches, and a BGK

with the patterns on the last pic i think its a chinese softshell "Pelodiscus sinensis"...i agree they are slow growers, used to have an albino kind...you should have a place where they can bask above the water line cause these turtles are not fully aquatic like the FRT's

i kept one for three years when i was little. didnt seem to grow at all. but im sure it was because of poor water quality/ diet. i didnt know how to take care of it.

Hello from another softshell turtle lover! I LOVE THESE GUYS!!!

Yes, yours is an Asian, and they get B I G. You've seen pictures of 2 guys holding up a giant turtle? Well... that's you in about 30 years.
People SAY they grow fast, but I personally have never seen ANY softshell grow quickly. There are about 4 or 5 American species, and a few Asian/African species. The Chinese (yours) and the Florida, and the "rough" softshell are the more common ones.
I have a smooth softshell currently and they are one of the best turtles.
They occassionally do bask (But if they do, it often means the water quality, or temperature are not to their liking) and I would lower the water level in your tank.
Enjoy!
