OK their supposed to be brother and sister, but I think the solid yellow one might be male. 1486522053937.jpg
This one with black is the dominant male. 1486522162199.jpg

Those look either hybridized or just inbred for generations. They should be a very vibrant solid yellow with zero barring. Males have deep black fins, sub males will have the black fins as well just not as prominent. I had some F1 yellow labs and there is a night and day difference between pure ones vs pet store variety or sadly most being sold period anymore.

How much difference between males and females, based on black fins?
They are inbred, how much is?
Of the 25 I had grown from fry, only one is solid yellow. Two total the other one is a juvenile.

In a good quality yellow lab, there is little difference between males and females. Both sexes will have black coloring in their dorsal, pectoral, and ventral fins.

I think it's actually very easy to spot the males. The black fins in mine were very distinctive vs the little bit of black on the females. Those above show why you should not hybridize these fish :(

I was thinking males have more black.

The one with the slight barring, is the father off all the fish less 3 adults. He has gotten darker with age. He is always strutting around the tank, keeping the younger males in check.

The dominant male part, I thought might bring out the black more.
I have not vented the solid yellow one, but I am starting to think is a male. I can't remember her/him ever holding eggs.
If so I had a 3 to 1 male to female ratio. The solid yellow one seems to at the bottom of the pecking order.
I bought them on Craigslist as inexpensive colorful fish. When I got back into the hobby. Never knew anything about malawi mbuna. Until after I took them home.
