It's been a while. My friend recently aquired a 80 gallon (pretty generic dimensions), it is running roughly 150g worth of filtration. He is mainly looking for a larger predator to live alone and thrive. Preferably a large south american, but any ideas for something else to fit the bill would be nice. Will be feeding something like hikari gold pellets.

Glass bangers welcome :naughty:.

Thank you

Is this the 48" x 24" footprint, or 48" x 16"? Either way I would look into a pike if you want a predator, but depending on the dimensions you could go with different species/sizes.

For glass banger, I'd go with a humphead flowerhorn. I like their colors.

Before this thread gets any more idiotic ..........

No, an RTC is not a good choice for this tank, and anyone that's seen the growth rate and/or adult size of an RTC would understand why. Nor is a Northern Pike, for the same reasons. Furthermore it is illegal to transport live native species of fish in Alberta, let alone keep any in an aquarium.

If your "friend" wants a larger predator to live alone and thrive, tell your friend to either buy a much larger tank for his large predator, or start researching some of the smaller predatory species (such as SA dwarf pikes) that actually can thrive in a smaller set up, such as a 16" wide 77 gallon tank. Then tell him to go to Pisces, Riverfront, and/or Gold's and see what they have in stock that will work in that tank size.

Large predators don't fit in small tanks. Yes, 80 gallons is small in this context.

Im not what you'd call an expert angler so I'm not exactly up to date on fish laws, I'm a catch and release guy myself. Good to know it's illegal to keep fish caught in aquarium. RD, it's good to see someone else knows of all the respectable LFS in Calgary! I'm sorry guys, I don't have tropical indoor pond to sustain a red tail catfish for when it outgrows my friends tank LOL.
