So tonight I picked up a 9-10inch bala shark from the LFS someone traded him in. I had simply never seen one so big so i had to have it. Now I am worried I barely have the space for one and cannot house a group.

how mean is it to keep one solo? he is pretty beat up so for now im just trying to get him silver instead of grey but after that should I keep him or sell him off ?

I agree he will be happier with friends but I don't think he will be to badly effected, most likely just skiddish. Congrats.

I can say from personal experience that when I had 6 of them they where happier and always together, now I am down to two of them.

well bad news last night(first night) he was swimming and eating today he is upside down floating around still alive but not much. anything i can do? Ive never had much luck curing swim bladder problems.

A real problem with trade in's is that you don't know what the water parameters he came out of was.

Osmotic shock causes all sorts of swim bladder troubles and is caused by (amoung other things) going from water with a high GH to water with a low GH. If he came from a poorly maintained tank and was put into your clean tank... that will do it. The acclimation required for those situations usually takes about 2 weeks, not a typical drip acclimation.

Chances of his coming from a poorly maintained tank is really high, people with good tank maintenance habits don't usually trade their fish in.

If he is in osmotic shock and is already upside down, I doubt you can save him. Your best hope would be some salt in the water, but even that is a long shot.

How big a tank did you put him in?

only a 55g but he just croaked.

its way over filtered and aggresively water changed I should have a 125 in the next month.

I have had a few and the one thing is to remember they go into shock very easily so as you gradually get everything in order with the water and stuff. take your time but i had mine with my afticans with a ph of 7.8 and they were like silver streams racing in the tank. so it is all on how you care for them.
