Here are some native catfish that are hard to find at LFS's yet are good aquarium pets.

To correct a piece of info. on Planet catfish on the Stonecat.....do not keep with darters or small shiners....it WILL eat them mainly because it maxes out at 12-13inches and not the 6 inches shown on the site (according to petersons field guide to Freshwater fishes, and the fishes of Missouri books by Lawrence Page and William Pflieger).:headbang2 Stonecats are also very resilient fish and are found in streams and lakes here in Mo.

Has anyone tried to keep any of these catfish?

I've got a brown bullhead, would love to find a spotted one, they look beautiful in the pix. Had a species of madtom for a couple days, found him along the shore of a river because he had swim bladder issues and died a few days later. :( Was a nice fish, would like to find another someday.

I have looked for the Spotted and Snail Bullheads and have also been unable to find them....the only lead I had was a guy who used to own them in Great Britain. I did have an Ozark madtom for several months, he had a cool pattern but was very slow growing ....he would come out to feed at night, until my Green Sunfish found him. When I get a bigger tank Im going to put some Stonecats in with some Missouri Longear Sunfish since the stonecats get bigger than the Ozards madtoms and Longears are less aggressive than Greens.

These look a lot like the one we catch in the creeks around here. We normally catch them in the 3-4 inch range. I have kept for a while in the past. Pretty easy going fish but gets scared easily in the aquarium always hiding.
Looks cool, I dont think Ive ever seen a Margined madtom before my madtoms hid all the time also ; but I think that was because they are nocturnal feeders and the fact that I had them with bigger more aggressive fish.

I had some stonecats for a few weeks during the summer. They ranged in length from 2" to around 4.5" and were pretty interesting. They should only be kept with fish that don't spook easy, and fish that will not spook the stonecats. I lost every single other fish except for some lampreys to these darn fish when they impaled them with their poisonous spines. And yes, these catfish are some of the few that do possess poisonous spines.

I will tell you a fish story thats true, a good friend of mine at work found a 14 inch dead stonecat while fishing near table rock lake in Missouri, I didnt believe him until after he showed me the digital photo in his camera. I was astouned that it was so large (as big as a Bullhead) and after losing 2 Ozark madtoms to my Green sunfish, knew that Stonecats are the Madtom for me to get for my biotype Sunnie tank. What kind of fish did your Stonecat impale, and do you still have them?
