Some computer problems need some help!

In the last week i have had some spyware/virus problems on my other computer i just wanted to know what you guys think is the best way to get rid of this program wise. Right now i have AVG 8.0 free edition and malware bytes anti malware on the computer and i scan regularly but on some of the threats it says they cannot be removed are there any other programs you suggest i download to use for scanning.

Also on startup my comp is a little slow, yes i know about msconfig and the startup utility but is there anything else i can do to my comp to speed it up besides defragment it

I am running windows xp home edition on this computer, it is a dell inspron 1501...

Any adivce appreciated
