Ive really fallen in love with my small school of corys (one green aneus, one peppered, two black lined, shopkeep said their name started with Ras but couldnt remember the rest) id love to dedicate a tank to schools of small fish, will probably do it with my 70 once i can move my monsters to the build. The 4 i have now school sometimes, should i add a couple more? As of now they have a 10 gallon to themselves

How many corys can i get away with in the 70 gallon? With a school of serpae tetras or maybe something else if it catches my eye? Something that stays under 5 inch..

Im not used to dealing with many small fish, ever since i started ive been keeping oddball comms with the most "normal" fish being geophagaii so this is untreaded territory for me. Ive read of and seen videos of HUGE wild groups of corys schooling and theyre just fascinating. Id like to do all different species of cory, will this effect the schooling? I think im going to go with another peppered and another green aneus for now so theres a pair of each specie.

So far, as a school, they do school but only at random, and especially around feeding times. which is still cool because they stay schooling even though food is spread throughout the tank. The two black lines never leave each others side and are about half the size of my others (making them about an inch maybe smaller lol)

Yay cories! In a 70 gal you can have quite a few of these guys. I used to have quite a bit of Cory cats. I found that the panda Cory and sterbi were probably my best schoolers. I think they can differentiate each other based on species but will still loose school if there own weren't available. Sorry not much help but bump for Cool Cats. Cheers

Thanks for the info you think like 30 would be a little overdoing it or should i stick around 20 of em? The black lines never leave each others sides, and the peppered and aneus seem to have the closest relationship otherwise. I love the look of sterbis, i wish those would come to my LFS!

I started keeping these little guys as a clean up crew for my 10 now i want a big tank of the little armored guys lol

I think 30 would work but that would limit the amount you can keep midwater wise IMO. This may sound horrible but sometimes it's trial and error with my community. It would get to the point were 1 fish in 1 fish out(dead). Then I'd stop. That's because I like the full tank look and it's hard to guesstimate max bio load. Mind you I don't get all at once. And do regular water changes and such. By the books is 1" fish per gallon though so go figure. There are some decent sellers in aquabid as well if your looking for something particular. Fishforless always had good deals on sterbi. A school of 30 would be pretty awesome. Share a pic.

Yeah, I started keeping rabbit snails as cleaners. Now I'm search high and low for new ones lol. Fun hobby.

cheers.

I've got a trio of albinos in my 40B .. and could probably add another 6 if I wanted. don't forget though small these guys can still hit 3". Mine love the plants and breed everytime I feed blackworms and do a massive water change threw the fall... they are indeed a blast though =)

watch what gravel/sand you use. don't want to use anything that will rip off their barbels.. I use a fine grade pebble, its a step above sand. I would suggest anything that would be considered "stingray safe" as appropriate for these guys.

they really appreciate live blackworms and like I said an unlimited amount of them left in the substrate and regular water changes and they will start spawning for you easily. Otherwise mine get Thera A regularly and love that as a staple.

As for tank-mates I haven't really found anything not to keep them with community wise, just don't keep livebearers unless your good w/ them eating the fry. I keep my 3 w/ my dolphin mormyrid, Denison barbs, banjo cats, fire eel... and most my grow-outs where housed with them at one point or another... as you said.. they make a nice clean-up crew. They do get abit squirrely now and then w/ my morm and the banjos so I would say if you have other bottom dwellers just make sure they can take a beating but not dish back ideally.

Hmm ill have to put some thought into tank mates. Might toss in a Mokelembembe bichir once the corys get larger, maybe a school of serpaes tetras or pike livebearers..

As far as substrate i use caribsea black tahitian in the 10 ga, a mix of fine gravel, black tahitian, and carib gold in the 30 ga, and half black half gold in the 70 (on either sides so they gradient into each other in the middle) its pretty soft fine sand so they should be fine on that front.

I realllly need to find a place locally with live blackworms, ive been seraching for a while, might just give in and order some online. I crush up brine shrimp and hikari carni for their current diet (rotating days)

So I'm thinking around 20 as a final count? Or 15 if I do decide to go with a bichir. They have really powerful jaws though I'm not sure if the Cory's will be able to stand up to it. I really hope all the different specie start schooling

In a 70 gallon you could pretty much have an entire colony if that is the main focus of your tank.
