Some Good Knives for These Tanks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i do not think a BGK would work in a 55 long term. the only knife i can think of, and would consider to house permanently in a 55 would be an african brown knife, average out to a max size of 8". there might be more, but not to sure, i am however pretty sure that BGK get way to big for a 55.

actually i think 12" for a bgk in a 55g woudlnt be that bad. isn't that how big they grow in captivity anyway?

I'd go with an African Brown Knife (Xenomystus Nigri). BGK can reach 18"-20" in captivity and a 75g would be minimum for them.

can a BGK only reach 12", sure it could, keep it in a small enough tank, dont feed it to often, might work out.
but, i think they regularly exceed 1 foot in the aquairum and have been known to exceed 2 ft. but the average size, from my reading on this site, is about 18".

They say that BGK grow up to 18 inch in captivity 20 inch in the wild.

I think the deciding factor on whether a BGK would work in a 55 is whether there are any other fish in the tank . . . if it's a community tank, I think a BGK would be out of the question, but if there's only one or 2 other fish it might work. I know we just recently got African Brown knives (2 juvies) for our 75 because it's a community tank and it just wasn't big enough for the BGK plus the other fish (senegal bichir, gouramis, pictus, rainbow shark, etc).
