Hey ive had oscars with various personalitys for 10 years, age 14 now. So i9m not a complete noob to big fish but i was looking into gars i know they need a massive tank and all that. I was juts wondering about which species is a good one, feeding agression level, hunting skills and personaility. THe store guy at the fish store near me was under the impression they only eat fish but i found that wrong with my oscars and usually find them wrong. Dont worry about tankmates the only thing im considering with gars is another gar. I ws also wondering about mixing gar species.

Can mix them as long as they are roughly the same size and u feed them well lah. You would also need a huge tank if u want to comm them, something like 10x3x3 feet and if you are considering the alligator ones you will need a pond ard 20x20 feet. Gars are lurking predators so they dont really charge at their prey the moment you put a live fish in. They will wait for awhile and move slowly untill they are very close to the fish then lunge at it. In the wild they hide amongst reeds and floating plants and wait for their prey to come by.

Plant the sides and back with giant valis and have some floating plants here and there. They still need space to swim so a full planted tank is not an option.

I don't know about needle gars but just make sure that the fishes that you get to comm with your gars are around the same size as the gars and also grow at the same rate. Some fishes might be like the same size as your gar when u just bought them. But in a few months time the gar will be like double its size then how?

Size is the main thing with both true gars and the fish sold as gars. They don't usualy eat things much bigger than 1/3 their own length but they might get greedy and try, esp. with a fish that is as thin as a needlefish. Remberthough when choosing a true gar that they don't bend as well as some fish so they need a tank that is wide as well as long. I like dwarf pond lilies for fish like that because it gives them cover for comfort but doesn't restrict their movement.
