I was do a little more research on Dovii and stumbled on this...

In nature the Dovii have a strange relationship with Hypsophrys nicaraguensis when breeding. There has been some documentation of nicaraugense aiding female dovii in the defense of the fry. The common thinking is that dovii regularly prey on convict cichlids as well as neetropolus cichlids, these small cichlids are the predators of the nicaraugense offspring. The protection provided by the nicaraguense aid in the survival rate of the dovii, in turn improving the survival rate of the nicaraugense. This cannot be replicated in the aquarium it only occurs naturally.

Didnt know that. Was googling dovii and came across that. Does anyone else know of this behavior of dovii in the wild?

Yeah, someone mentioned that behavior a few weeks ago. I think it was in the thread about the smartest cichlid.

As a side note I wonder why this behavior isn't replicable. I bet in a large enough tank it would work, although it would have to be very large I would guess.

Thats what i was wondering. In a large enough tank like a 300g just for a breeding pair of dovii and some nicaraguense. Or maybe a pond. Willing to do an experiment. Have to keep a close eye cause my dovii eats anything that fits in his mouth. If it doesnt fit he tears it up and makes it fit.
