Hey all. Currently the search function of the site is broken.. Tried.... No I figured I just post up and ask. So Ive got one of my 125 tanks Im getting set up right now (going to get both going) Im using a 55 gallon tank for the sump. Im looking at possibly doing sock filters then running into a large bio section like a wet dry then a open sump section for the Pump to sit or anything Else. Ive got about 30gal of bio balls. Ive never used socks filters before. My questions are as follows.

If doing Sock filters what size of diameter should I use? 4" or 7"
Is there a specific length?
What material?
What micron of filtration?
2 or 1 sock? Im running a 1-1/2 beananimal overflow with a laguna 2000.
Anything special youd do different after doing your sump?

And finally Id love to see some pictures of your sump filtration.

Thanks!!

You could use 55 plastic dividers to divide off the sections instead of siliconing in glass panels that way the tank can always be reused. And it will still work the same just divide it into 3 sections. The first I would use filter floss works the same as the sock and its cheap to replace. There is even house hold things that got it as stuffing like pillows. Then the second section use plastic pot scrubbies from dollar tree. They are the same material as bio balls just have more space for bb. Divide that off from the pump and there you go.

There's one I made recently for my 75. It worked good but I toke it out cause the pump wasn't giving enough flow with the head height. It's the same concept as I told you just standing up and in drawers. ImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1370588665.622027.jpg

Thanks for the input. I definitely will look at some of that. Still just taking in all the ideas I can. Ive done the methods with Filter floss and stuff But ive never used socks. Im trying to figure out if socks polish the water that much better or are they that much easier to use or is the better ways about doing things. But all input is greatly appreciated. The Tank is something I dont plan on using again. Its only use will be as the sump.

Here's my step by step build I did for my 75gal. The sump is a 30 long and has been running flawlessly since its inception about 8 moths ago. I've also been slipping filter socks over my intake to sump pipe and it seems to have helped a lot. The only thing I would change at this point would be drilling my tank rather than using a CPR. Hope this helps some!

In my first chamber (left side), I have my intake into a filter sock with a UV sterilizer running. I also use this large chamber for nuisance fish, seeding sponge filters, sinking drift etc etc. I love having the large chamber on my sump.

In the second chamber is where i have all of my mechanical filtration. This part is 100% customizable and totally up to you. I have different ppi sponges in this chamber and normally have filter floss on top.

The third chamber is for my heater as well as any type of chemical that is needed as in carbon and ammonia remover (never really use this space other than to seed additional ceramic disks for other tanks in the future and the tanks we install for others).

The fourth chamber is my wet/dry. I have 3.5 gallons or so of bio balls in the cage and then 8 large bags of the ceramic disks under it. To the right of my bio material is my sponge polisher that separates this chamber from my pump which is a Rio that pushes ~900 gph back into the tank thanks to the spraybar.

Let me know what you think and if you have any questions, If you want fast answers, PM me on the other forum as I check it more frequently.
