Ok, I'm planning on getting my first actual MONSTER tank, like 600 gallons or so. The problem is, i've never had such a big aquarium. I need info on how to filter/ do I need sumps and any other tips that come with owning a big fishtank. All help would be appreciated, thanks.

Wow, thats going to be a big tank! Do you have an aquarium now? What will you be stocking the tank with? If it were me I would get an old used 125 and use it for a sump. Will the 600 have overflows?
Also look up trickle systems. I'm using it on my 360 and 450 and I absolutely recommend it!

I do have two aquariums right now, a 20 gallon and a 5 gallon. I will be stocking the big tank with gars, bichirs, clown loaches, arowanas and possibly some stingrays.

I need info on pretty much all the basics and everything that makes a big tank different than a small tank. That includes, water changes, filtration, hoods, lighting and pretty much everything else. Obviously i'm also researching but rereading something is not going to kill me and it's hard to find info that actually covers the basics of keeping a large tank.

Dude, a 20 gallon to a 600 gallon is a BIG difference? Do you even have a place to put it and support its weight?

Yes we do. We have a spot planned out and I have been researching and planning this for almost two years now.

Check out my build thread in my signature. I'm not saying my setup is perfect, but I think I did ok.

My biggest oversight was not realizing how much energy it will take to heat so much water. My situation is probably different though, since my tank is located in an unheated room that will get down in the lower 50s and maybe even low 40s on really cold winter nights.

In regards to filtration, for tanks this size I prefer sumps, but you could get away with using large canisters.

Water conditioner: look into Seachem Safe. It's a super concentrated version of Prime. I bought one liter of it and I believe it's supposed to treat 100,000 gallons. If you don't like the powder, Seachem makes a more concentrated version of prime for ponds.

Sorry but I have to ask, if you've spent two years researching and planning, why are you asking about all the basics? :) Kidding of course. Head over to the setup section and only take advice from guys with BIG tanks, not the kids who read about them and try to answer your questions.

Because I might have missed something and it won't hurt to re-read. Also i'm not only looking at the tank but also the species and other equipment. Better safe than sorry. I'll read up on the setup section also.
