Just a few photos of Rough Skinned Newts (Taricha granulosa).

These are some amazing amphibians. The two photos on land were taken on a barren slope hundreds of yards from any water. The swimming newt was in a huge reservoir (35,000 acres, 300'+ deep). The newt I caught fishing was in a small farm pond next to my house. They're everywhere!

The only thing that eats them are Garter Snakes, they are immune to the Newt's toxins.

I agree, I'm sure their toxicity has a major role in their abundance.

I was using half a nightcrawler for bait. I've caught tons of them and they almost never actually get hooked - They just clamp down on the worm and don't let go!

used to see alot of them when i was younger... cool photos

nice cali newt

They are actually Rough-Skinned Newts, aka Oregon Newt (Taricha granulosa). The California Newt (Taricha torosa) is VERY similar, but supposedly has eyes that bulge out more. The definitive difference is in the arrangement of the teeth.
