Extremely irresponsible and unethical behavior by people who release them, but most laws banning certain fishes are a little extreme in most cases.

this article is exactly why there is rules and regulations against keeping exotict animals...what kind of IDIOT's and even a ichthyologist would not know it's a pacu

fixed it for you. I feel you on the subject but there are a ton of threads on this already. And I question the people holding these jobs that keep id'ing fish wrong.

Well, here's an idea- 1 fish is not all that harmful. In fact, the more displaced it is, the LESS harmful it is. Meaning, it will live out its life, never being able to reproduce because there aren't any similar species around, and die. End of story.
I suppose someone could bring up the issue of diseases, but it would have to be something pretty hardcore to kill a rivers worth of wildlife.

However there are more than one people dumping Pacus all over the place. With any popular aquarium pets, you are going to be likely to find more than one. Plus, some species are more destructive than others to the floras and the soil.

There is a reason why goldfish is already spread throughout most of North America in lakes...

Either way, catching a fish you never seen before is a scary sight!

I've never heard this story before. And am not familiar with the demeanor of pacus. Is it possible for a pacu to do that whole bit-a-knife-and-left-teeth-marks thing that the dude claimed? or is that a whole reconstruction biased by the desire to make the piranha story stick?

You never seen a Pacu can do eh? Anyway, Pacus are always misidentified with piranhas when they are young enough. Sometimes I see stores mislabel and sell baby RBPs when they are actually Pacus.

a pacu could leve marks in a knife. my pacu bit his filter return and took out a hunk and hes still less than six inches.
