I dug this pond at the begining of the summer this year. It's a work in progress. I like flowers and have about 150 different day lilies that are going in around the river...

The river is lined with pond liner, but the pond does not have a liner... Nothing but clay around here!

As for fish, only four Herichthys tourquoise. One male three females...
A red eared slider that's about ten years old... And a bunch of frogs!

Comments and questions welcome, just remember the landscaping isn't finished... :)

Yeah good start can't wait to see it dne and complete with land scalping :)

What's the exposure?

Full sun, Part-sun, Shade.

Are the plants going to be in and around the egdes and have wet feet, or terrestrial only.

I'm in IL. USDA Zone 5.

Most if not all Sedges fit the bill - Carex sp. some natives.
Hosta and Ferns will work
Sweet Flag - Acorus sp. some are native.
Snakeroot - Cimicifuga
Goatsbeard - Aruncus
Buttercup - Ranunculus, ground cover like growth
Rodger's Flower - Rodgersia
Virgina Bluebells - Mertensia. Spring blooming wildflower, will do dormant in summer

Ragwort - Ligularia. Should not be planted on pond edge. Moist not wet.

I have hostas and ferns surrounding the pond and should come in nicely next year. My concern is the vertical wall that go into the pond:

I will be draining it this fall to get the herichthys tourquoise out and when I do I will be snipping all those pesky roots that are sticking out.

So now armed with this new info what do you suggest? I know very little on this subject... Will those species you suggest work on almost an 80* incline?
