(sorry for the repost - but need some info quick as to whether or not i am crazy with my mentality on discus care in my proposed tank...)

so i have decided to take the discus plunge - following is the setup/plan, and of course, some questions.....

setup:

265gal 7x2.5x2 tank - black on 3 sides

3 Fluval FX5's for filtration

gravel bottom with malaysian driftwood and fake plants only

stocking plan:

20-30 assorted discus - 2.5"-5"

100-200 dither fish - including various tetras, cory cats, algae eaters

now, the plan and questions:

i know that discus like frequent water changes - but given the tank size/stocking/filtration for this setup - will 2 x 30-40% water changes weekly be enough? or even 1 50% weekly?

as for feeding - ill be mixing live with dry 2 x a day at most

looks good(dont forget to soak the drift wood)

This thread is a little old to post on, but in case you are still looking for info... You might want to stick with frozen food because of the parasites. Also, depending on the type of discus, a black background might make them look dark and not show their color. This is especially a problem with pigeon bloods. They will get peppering that can be permanent. Wilds, snakeskins, blue diamonds etc will be fine with the black bg. I actually changed mine from black to white.

I just went through a problem because of feeding too much dry food, I would stick to frozen or live.

Feeding live foods is not a good idea unless you're absolutely certain the foods are clean of parasites and bacteria - as discus are prone to parasite infections.

Only way to do this is to propogate our own live cultures, which is usually more trouble than it's worth.
