so i want to buy or make a new big tank for it and for some other tank mate

so i wonder

what is the minimem tank for breeding the motoro ?

what is the maximam size it can reach? and how long it take?

what do u think of those fish as a tank mate

- arowana
- frontosa cichlid
- electric yellow lab cichlid

the tank i put here now is a temp untile i make the big one in the summer vacation

i make a test every week to check the water qulity and change it 2 time evry week 25% each time

i test the water befor this thread and her what it resulted :

PH: 7.2
Ammonia: 0-0.2 ppm
Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate: 0 ppm

:)

Don’t buy a frontosa. You will have to make them a rocky tank.
I know there are loads of people in here that keep them in bare bottom tanks (and lots of other fish). But they will need a rocky tank to thrive and breed.
A frontosa tank is meant to look like this:

But, back on track. They will need a 200 cm x 80 cm x 60 cm tank to breed (they will breed in smaller tanks though). They max out at 30"+ so you will need a larger tank at some point.

Your water is ok, but you will need more and bigger filters for your new tank.

Also, don’t think about tank mates before your tank is up and running. There is no idea in adding tank mates from the start as your filters would get overpowered.

You have made some good ray shots though. :)

And i know that Miles will say this, so i im gonna beat him to it: Use the search function! :D

The shot was taken before they added the fish. I want to put focus on the tank, not the fish.

How long have you had that tank running? 0-nitrites and more importantly 0-nitrates with some ammonia indicate a new/cycling tank!!!!

Get your water under control first and foremost. Then start worrying about that new tank!

I dont know that test he used, sounds like a stick one though. So it could be nothing at all.

I dont understand how you can keep your nitrate at 0? You dont have any plants or anything.

Are you sure you have testet your nitrate?

And like JD/.62 said, it dosent sound like that tank has been running for a month.

gotta love lack of research......damn search button must be broken again
motoro max size is over 24" frank in the netherlands has one @30"disk so minimum tank for an adult pair for be 600gallons 8'x4'x30"...
they grow very fast so its only a matter of a few year to get it large
i have kept frontosa with rays before was a nice combo....ditch the yellow lab iit will probally eat the rays eyes....

lil research on your part goes along way read all the stickies and use the search funtion for more info...

anders i kept frontosa with ray before with no problems.... tank was 100% bare

I think you missed my point Nic.. :)

Sure, you can keep rays and frontosas together in an empty tank. But should you?

I don’t believe so. The frontosas come from Lake Tanganyika. Here they live among the big rocks in shoals of both males and females down to 70 meters. The water is alkyne and between 24-26 degrees. They live, feed and breed among the rocks where they can fell safe.

Rays on the other hand, come from the acidic waters of the Amazon. Temps can be as high as 32 degrees. They also live on the sandy bottoms. They don’t need anything to hide behind because they are like the ghosts of the sandbanks.

So here we have two fish that comes from totally different environments. Fontosas should be kept in rocky tanks so they can feel safe and be bred. Just like in the wild.

Rays don’t need anywhere to hide. So I think its ok to keep them in bare bottom tanks.

If you want some cool fish with your rays, make an Amazon tank with driftwood and plants. And then buy some earth eaters or whatever you like form South America (you need sand with earth eaters to see their natural).

Most people in here all know what ammonia, nitrite and nitrate are, and how to keep their tanks clean. But they never move their aquarium skills to the next level, adding plants and wood to their tanks, making it all come together. Or maybe an all rocky alkyne tank, for cichlids from Lake Malawi Tanganyika or Victoria. And I think it’s a shame, because they are really missing what this hobby is all about.

Now, I didn’t write all this to step on your feet Nic, trust me, I think you’re a great guy. :)
And it sounds like you have a lot of experience in this hobby. I only did it to show you my opinion on the subject.

Don’t you think this tank would look super with a couple of rays in it? :)
