Hello all,

as most of you know I bought my first ray about 2 months ago and I am sad to say I lost him last week. All of the fish in my tank shut down and started doing terribly. I lost my ray the next am and my baby brockapondo peacock bass.

I had no idea wtf went wrong and I it really bothered me badly. my water tested fine and I couldnt explain what the hell happened. It btohered me so bad I took a sample of water to be tested a few days later after 3 50% water changes. The water tested + for very trace amounts of chlorine/bleach and house hold cleaner. These chemicals showed up in a test days after exposure and after 3 big water changes. I always thought bleach/chlorine would go away after a hours but there were still traces so please be cautious.

What I think happened was my wife used clorox spray cleaner to whipe down the cutting board on our counter and I came behind and cut up the shrimp I feed to the ray.

I just thought I would post this so that maybe I could prevent someone else from having the same happen.

This was a totaly rediculous and preventable thing to happen and should have never happened now I have to live with this.

Man, that sucks to hear. Those were some expensive and cool losses. Years ago, when I was still a kid, I lost all the occupants of a 45 gallon when my parents cleaning person brought over a friend to help. She sprayed the window directly above the tank with ammonia glass cleaner. Needless to say, I lost every fish.

Also if anyone has a Hystrix ray or another kind of ray that will live COMFORTABLY IN A 300 gallon and would like sell it please pm me I want to get another one. I'm doing daily water changes and I'm going the water tested again next monday to make sure there is no traces of the chemicals left in the tank. So I won't be able take delivery until atleast late next week.

Yea the broko is a pretty rare peacock bass. luckily my orinos are in a grow out. The only fish that survived was a silver dollar I had in there with them

Where did you get your water tested? I find it hard to believe that you cutting shrimp on the board and then feeding your fish caused the level of chlorine/bleach to be high in your tank. Do you use tap water for water changes? I would look at your source of water as the cause.
Sorry you lost your fish.

Sorry you lost your fish.

I get my water from my well

A. the water hadn't been changed in 8 days so I know that had nothing to do with it

b. I also took a sample of tap water along with my tank water which came back fine.

There is no way around it spotfin this was my fault and it was totaly preventable. Believe me I would love to blame something out of my own control but I can't. At first I tried to blame it on my wifes mom because she had came over while my wife was in the hospital the week before and sprayed ant killer. I had told her not to spray any thing in the basment where the tank is when she called and said she was going to. After this she swore she didn't and to be honest I didn't believe her thats kinda why I did had the water tested along with just plain trying to find out what the hell happened.

im sorry but i agree with spotfin here. especially after 3 50% changes. you might want to look for another cause to this. what is your wc equipemnt like and keep digging as i dont think cutting on a cutting board will give you high enough amounts to be in there. also what did you take the samples in with that couldve given them the readings. also maybe you need to just do more water changes as you hadnt done one for 8 days before. also im not saying your wrong but i wouldnt be convinced about it just yet.

and im very sorry for your loss it really sucks when we lose one of our rays.

You would have to soak the shrimp in clorox on a regular basis to get any amount to show up in 300 gallons. I do not know where your problem lies but I will suggest not using a cutting board. I use a bowl and a pair of scissors. Cutting up food is all it is used for and is 100 times easier then a board and a knife.

^^AGREED^^ This just does not add up, in my opinion. I can't imagine bleach contamination from a small amount being sprayed on a cutting board. I understand your need to seek answers due to your fish loss, but you're really reaching. I don't think this is the case. I'm sorry . . .

oh god that sucks
