My 6 in. Oscar has hole in head disease! :( I need some help quick! He has been like this for about 3 weeks and i didn't realize it was a disease until now! I always thought that it was just a cut. He is in a tank with 2 RB Pacu 1 Severum and 1 Blood Parrot. This summer i am moving them all into a REALLY REALLY big pond (400-1000 gal.) Any treatments? Any ideas? I have an Emperor 700 (i think) and an Eheim Classis. I think my polypterus is starting to catch it too because he is starting to get a few cuts! HELP QUICK!

Y'd better get some treatment medicen now! Because discus get it quite easy, most LFS would have some.

Be carefull dosing the stuff and if possible get him in his own tank for the treatment and then some more so that you are absolutely shure that he is now longer infected.

Also you will have to remove the carbon out your filter during treatment. Most important right now is to get him out the tank. Maybe a salt treatment would help to, but I don't know the right dosing.

Good luck! And watch the other fish for signs of infection too!

Start feeding him different types of foods, and stop giving feeders altogether. A mix of beefheart, brine shrimp, blood worms, crickets, cichlid pellets, and frozen peas (Yep! You heard me right!) changing up his diet day to day will help a lot.

Do you really feel like that's the only thing he has got to do? I would always put a sick fish in quarantene.

Are you shure he has that desease?
Is he getting skinny and does he suffer white crap.

What size tank are all them fish in right now?theres alot fo big fish in there. so that could be a reason for it.an them feeders, my oscatr gets shrimp, pellets veggies an home raised jewel cichlids that took over my brother in laws tank lol

My experience, certainly not the only one, was that the hole in the head was a result of diet, and not from anything contagious. When I changed up my oscar's diet to include several different protein sources and some vegetable matter as well, he healed right up. None of the other fish in the tank exhibited symptoms.

In general, I try "tactical weapons" before I pull out the "nuclear arsenal" when it comes to curing disease in freshwater fish.

Hole in the head is very common in Oscars. You need to remove the carbon from the filters, and treat with GENERAL CURE (aquarium pharmicutial product) as directed. Wait 48 hours, and repeat the doseage. Wait for another 48 hours, and then do a 25% water change. Add the carbon back to the filters to remover any remaining medication. This treatment may be repeated if necessary. Also, you may want to add in some salt to the tank. DR.WELLFISH AQUARIUM SALT (aquarium pharmicutial product) helps to reduce the stress on the fish. 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons, do not add it in all at once, soread it out over 2 days, and also "melt" the salt down in a large cup of warm water, this gets it circulating into the water faster.

Hope this helps!
Jen ;)

i have a 30 gallon tank with a severum, blood parrot, and pictus... they are all tiny...we he be OK in there? Is it contagious? Or should i treat the entire tank? Also i think my polypterus as it too! :( What is the best medication out there??

Yeah, "tactical weapons" are better then just doing the medical stuff. I agree with you on that. But if he states that he has it for 3 weeks now, it might be about time to seperate him and make him strong and healthy again. Feeding various foods is always a good thing and might be a thing of aproval.
