With african lungfish you will never be save .
It can work with tankmates for a time but at one point they will mostly kill their
tankmates.
Its a gamble.
I would search after a south american lungfish.
Mine is about 10 inches and he is in a tank with baby plecos without any problems.

Are the bichirs much smaller?

You can try it but keep a watchfull eye. African lungs are predatory and fast growers.

Keep a watchfull eye. Keep the lungs well fed.

I mixed larger size bichir 16-25" with african lungfish at 18-30"+. Just keep the african lungfish well feed and don't keep any slender head type bichir especially 10" or smaller. They will likely to get their head crushed. A 12" lungfish is still on its skittish period and will likely to get nip by larger bichirs.

Dang... I'm deciding if I should get it or not.... Seems pretty risky :/
