Dear Friends,

After a long wait about a year, i got this lion fish imprted. With a lot of passion, i left it in the aquarium for a week to check its habits. It was eating live gold fishes for lunch and dinner. It was really healthy and the aquarist proudly handed me the fish.

I set it up last friday and since then it did not eat. I thought it was just acclimatizating to its new environment. I put some gold fishes today in the morning for it to eat and left for office. At 1.30 today it passed away.

Can you please tell me, why. I do not have a skimmer for the tank and previously the clowns living in it were fine. Salinity is ok

Kindly help as i want to keep another one.

Regards
Gokul

We need more information. What species was it? how big is the tank? What are the actual paremeters of the tank water? What kind of filtration? Any noticable signs of distress? It's possible that the goldfish gave it some illness, although unlikely, as freshwater and saltwater diseases are usually different. Also, live goldfish are not a good food. Squid, shrimp, silversides, ect. are all much better for lionfish.

It is not a good idea to feed lionfish goldfish.I would say thats what killed him. Also loinfish need top line water specs

I'll add onto this with what limited info we have. I've not lost a volitan but I have lost a pair of dwarfs. The first one would only eat live rosy reds and died after about 7 days. This can come about due to the high cholesterol and fat from FW feeders. Long term damage to the liver of hardier fish has been recorded after lengthy FW feeders. The other lion I lost ate just fine in the store and died two days after I brought him home. Keep in mind dwarfs are more delicate, even if your tank is in perfect water parameters. In my area nearly 90% of fu-manchu's arrive dead, fuzzies are about 50-50, and radiata's and volitans have proven (for us) the hardiest.

Check your parameters just in case a looming system crash is fast coming.

I am very sorry for your loss, it's never easy or fun.
