Hello, recently i've found out that you were supposed to leave the water out a day before water change or put in some chemicals to dechlorinate it. But I've been doing the old fashioned 50% weekly water change with just tap water from the shower but nothing bad has happened to my bass, and i've been doing this for over a year now. My bass is growing fine and my tank is fine. So does that mean all of the water conditioner things are false? Or what I'm doing will have a long term affects on my aquarium

if you don't have chlorine or chloramines in your tap water (like if you have well water), you don't need any conditioners. Have you tested your tap water?

I've never used any test strips, and I'm sure I don't have well water because I live in suburban areas

What does prime do? Is it a water conditioner? If I'm doing fine without prime before then I wouldn't need it now right?

Things seem to be getting confused here....well water was mentioned as an example of water with no chlorine or other chemicals in it...as far as water changes,it could be that the amount of tap water you are using for your changes don't contain enough municipal additives to bring harm to your fish...Here are two examples;I use a five gallon bucket full of tap water to top off my tank when the sump is low due to evaporation.I probably should but I don't treat this added water and my fish show no effects from it.....On the other hand there is a large koi pond in the park near my area with some fish that have lived and grown there for several years.A few years ago a pipe cracked and water flowed into this pond and killing most of the koi because of the gallons of chlorinated water that flowed in.

It is a good idea to add a dechlor to ur tap, you never know when ur fish can be stressed and adding chlorinated water could likely push them beyond repair. Fishkeeping 101: when using tap water dechlor prior to adding to tank! Your fish may seem alright but who knows how they really are, prime also rids heavy metals. Better to be safe then sorry imo
