I think my female L260 pleco is dying and I am freaking out

I walked in the room today and she was out of her cave, on the opposite side of the tank laying listlessly on her side and breathing very fast

I can see reddening around her fins and anus

I just did a water only a couple of days ago and haven't changed anything, my male seems fine so far

I've isolated her in a small plastic tank hanging inside the main tank at the same temperature and have been adding fresh clean water to her isolation tank (treated with just a touch of aquarium salt)

I have antibiotics and medications, should I put something in the tank? She seems to be the only fish affected, please... if anyone has any advise please help. I love these fish, my l260's are my absolute favorites out of everything in my tank...

Sorry for not having water parameters, my test kit was upstairs and I didn't want to delay posting

Ph 6.8
Ammonia 0
tank temperature - 78 - 79 deg F
30 gallon

she seems a bit more alert at the moment, thanks for the link, I will go ask them as well.

Sorry to hear that :rip

Maybe it was just his time to go . Hope all your other fish are doing well.

Ryan

I doubt it was 'just her time' Remember Ryan, I got that tank setup and the L260's from Vanessa last august and she had had them for about a year, so they really weren't THAT old. The other one is doing fine (so is stephen, I saw him bopping around this morning and breathed a huge sigh of relief since I didn't see him at all last night) So I am going to continue to medicate the tank through the recommended dosage of the tetracycline and hope that takes care of everyone else in the tank.

it could be any number of reasons.. temperature.. infection, bacteria, etc...

I've had plecos where for months they were fine.. and all of a sudden.. they died due to different reasons.. hard to say.. but sometimes.. thats how things are in life... dont give up... thats my advice...

LOL It will take a LOT more than this to get me to give up, you can ask RyanJR, he's my brother, and he can tell you I DON'T give up on anything I have set my mind to doing. I'm very sad as these fish were given to me by a friend who could no longer keep them and the L260 dying makes me feel like I let her down somehow... But everything seems to point to hemorrhagic septicemia so I am treating the entire tank with a full round of antibiotics and just hoping that nothing goes wrong while I am in Japan for 20 days, because no one else where I live knows anything about fishkeeping. They know how to feed my fish while I'm gone (I leave a page long detailed note, for flake food, shrimp pellets and algae wafers XD ) nothing else.

Forgot that Pleco's live so long... one site said 10+ years. Yikes!

Sounds like you have everything ready for your trip over, in addition might want to make a list of medications you have and organize them.. just in case... so that you can give directions to mom as needed.

hit me on email if anything else comes up =)
