I have a Ropefish (I plan on getting another one) and three Port Hoplo Catfish in my 55 gallon,as well as a small Pleco. All these fish get along great, but, unfortunately they all frequent the bottom of the tank and aren't spectacularly colorful. Does anybody have any suggestions for a fish species that would do well in this tank and likes to hang out in the middle of the water column? Aggressive, semi-aggresive, passive. It doesn't really matter. Just so long as its big enough to not be eaten and stays small enough to prevent overcrowding when the ropefish and catfish grow bigger.

What kind of pleco it it? unless its gonna stay under 12" when its fully grown I might move it...
As for what you could add, as it is all your fish should stay pretty nice to each other even when they're big, so you don't want something that'll terrorize them. Doesn't sound like you're looking for a monster to add... here are some suggestions-
-Snakeskin gouramis get to about 8" and are pretty cool, ot colorful or anything but mine is always moving around and checking out whats going on outside the tank, looking at me and stuff.
-Fully grown diamond tetras and bleeding heart tetras will most likely be too big for even big ropefish to eat. They get bigger than most tetras and they look pretty nice.
-A nice school of rainbowfish would also look sweet, and with your 55 you could easily get like 6 even though they'll reach 5-6 inches each.

I dunno if your tank had much in the way of plant cover but the few suggestions I have would do really well with lots of plants, or at least a moderately planted setup.

If it's still that small and youve had it for a few weeks then you should be good, usually the commons grow pretty fast.
